Top 5 Tenerife Beaches

Posted in Uncategorized at 11:00 am by admin

Tenerife has long been one of the most popular destinations for European travellers looking for a little sun and sand. The island is justly famed for its outstanding beaches – some are great for swimming, others for sunbathing, some are perfect for children, others have outstanding facilities for wind surfing and other water sports. With cheap holidays to Tenerife more widely available than ever before, getting to the island is simple enough – but once you are there, which one of Tenerife’s beaches is the right one for you?

Playa de las Teresitas

Playa de las Teresitas is one of the most beautiful man made beaches in the world. With thousands of tons of pristine sand imported all the way from the Sahara desert and carefully placed palm trees dotted across it, you could well mistake this for a stretch of the Caribbean coastline. The water is calm and crystal clear, and with the spectacular mountain backdrop and excellent facilities, it’s easy to see why this is one of the most popular of Tenerife’s beaches.

Playa de las Americas

Playa de las Americas is perfect for those who want a bustling beach on their cheap holiday to Tenerife. This beach sheltered and has calm waters, perfect for sunbathers and families with children, and it backs onto a terrific promenade that is packed with shops and restaurants. If a busy nightlife is just as important to you as relaxing on the beach in the day, Playa de las Americas is right next to the islands best clubs, including the famous (or infamous!) Tramp’s Nightclub.

Playa de la Arena

This black volcanic sand beach, has recently been awarded a European Blue Flag for its cleanliness and quality, and is renowned as one of the most attractive beaches in Tenerife. Cheap holidays in Playa de la Arena are particularly popular with couples, families, and those who are just looking to relax on their package holidays to Tenerife – it has a quieter and more laid back atmosphere than some of the more “party hard” beaches and resorts.

El Medano

If water sports are the most important thing for your cheap holiday to Tenerife, then El Medano is the beach for you. Located on the south east coast, the golden sandy beach is attractive to look at, but the strong winds make it unsuitable for serious sunbathers. However, those same winds make it an outstanding choice for windsurfing and parasailing – the beach has hosted a number of world championship windsurfing competitions in recent years. With great conditions and excellent facilities, this is the Tenerife beach of choice for avid water sports fans.

Playa de las Vistas

Playa de las Vistas, located close to Playa de las Americas, is perhaps the most child friendly beach in Tenerife. Package holidays to this part of island are naturally popular with families. The water is calm and clear, the sand perfect for sunbathing and sandcastles, and the beach itself is regularly patrolled by lifeguards. However, Playa de las Vistas has more to offer than just a playground for the children. It is commonly regarded as the finest beach in the south of Tenerife, with its long stretch of golden sand earning it a well deserved Blue Flag for its quality, and it has plenty of restaurants, shops and watersports options to keep adults entertained as well.

Visiting the Temple of Heaven in Beijing

Posted in Uncategorized at 11:00 am by admin

When deciding what sites to see while visiting Beijing, the colorful Temple of Heaven is a must-see on your list. The literal translation from the traditional Chinese for this unique site is “Altar of Heaven.” Regardless of what you call it, you will certainly feel like you have found your own slice of heaven when you visit this unique site.

The Temple of Heaven is comprised of several buildings in the southeast section of Beijing, in the Xuanwu District. In addition, the buildings are based on Taoist beliefs which refers to a set of philosophical and religious traditions that have existed in Asia for more than two thousand years. It’s such an impressive and important structure that it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1998.

History of the Temple of Heaven

The Temple of Heaven site was built in the early 1400s while the Yongle Emperor ruled the land. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, emperors visited the complex for prayer ceremonies. The ceremonies, which took place each year, were meant to bring a good harvest. The Yongle Emperor also built the Forbidden City in Beijing, which is another site that should certainly be added to your list of places to visit.

Change of Name

The temple complex was originally named the Temple of Heaven and Earth, but was renamed the Temple of Heaven during the 16th century while China was under the reign of the Jiajing Emperor between 1522 and 1567.

The temple was renovated during the 18th century and, in 2005, the complex underwent a $6 million renovation to prepare for the upcoming Olympic games and the visitors due to arrive in the city. The project was completed in 2006.

There are three main parts to the complex, including the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, the Imperial Vault of Heaven and the Circular Mound Altar.

The Temple of Heaven’s Hall of Prayer

The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests is a triple-gabled building that was constructed on layers of marble. This is where emperors prayed during the annual ceremonies. It is a wooden building and was rebuilt in 1889 after a fire. Amazingly, the building was constructed without using a nail. Inside the Hall of Prayer, there are 28 pillars, each of which was carved from single tree trunks.

The Temple of Heaven’s Imperial Vault

The Imperial Vault of Heaven is a single-gabled building built on marble situated in the center of the complex. In previous years, it held memorial tablets of ancestors to the emperors. It is smaller than the Hall of Prayer and is surrounded by a wall, called the Echo Wall. The wall, just four meters high but with a 193-meter circumference, has amazing acoustical properties. If one person whispers a sentence from one end of the wall, a second person will clearly hear the sentence from the other end of the wall.

Also, there are Triple Echo Stones in the courtyard. Each produces its own number of echoes from a word spoken by a person facing the Imperial Vault. A 360-meter long walkway, which is raised, connects the Hall of Prayer to the Imperial Vault. The walkway is called the Vermillion Steps Bridge.

The Temple of Heaven’s Circular Altar

The Circular Mound Altar is a round platform built on marble and is where the praying occurred. It was significant for the emperor to be seen in prayer, which mostly occurred to gain good harvests. The emperor, in ancient times, was viewed as the Son of Heaven. So, it was vital that he be seen showing respect and making sacrifices. This is why the ceremonies at the Temple of Heaven were important. The ceremony took place twice a year.

The Symbolism of the Temple of Heaven

Symbolically, the temple demonstrates connections between heaven and earth – earth by a square and heaven a circle. The temple is surrounded by walls. Most elements of the temple’s design have meaning, either symbolically or through numerology. For example, the stones in the tiers of the Altar of Heaven are either in threes or nines, which is a primary numerological theme. The number nine, which holds the highest value, symbolized the emperor. Ancient Chinese religious beliefs viewed heaven as round and earth as square.

Hebridean cruises use small vessels with a much reduced passenger capacity than usual cruise liners. The Monastery of Santo Spirito - An Experience in Italian History

Posted in Uncategorized at 11:00 am by admin

If you are planning a trip to Italy and are a basket and craft enthusiast, you may want to stop at the Monastery of Santo Spirito, which is located about five minutes away from the city of L’Aquila, Abruzzo. This former monastery and fortress is nestled in the Apennine Mountains and is situated in a cliff overlooking a winding, lush valley. The building itself was built in approximately 1200 A.D. and the Romanesque architecture is still visible to this day.

The Monastery now serves as a small resort, with twelve rustic bedrooms that contain simple, organic furnishings set against the background of the ancient white stone walls and the red tiled floors. This style of decorating reinstates the feeling of peace and solitude that were present in these rooms when they served as dormitories for the monks who once roamed its halls.

Although these accommodations also include the modern conveniences of Wi-Fi Internet, individual bathrooms, televisions, and telephones, the room designers made the presence of these modern luxuries as unobtrusive as possible, keeping as much of the site’s heritage and historical integrity intact as possible. The rooms themselves have also been decorated to be eco-friendly, using all natural woods and fabrics.

For your eating needs, the Scorcio della Sala Ristorante is located in the central part of the Monastery and offers a menu that consists of only locally grown foods. The dining area itself contains long traditional banqueting tables that are decorated with beautiful white table clothes and simple elegant candles. Again, the main courses, entrees, and wine are all grown and produced in the L’Aquila area and maintain the historical ambiance of the Monastery.

This resort also offers a number of activities for its guests which include a basket weaving class. Basket weaving using wicker has long been a tradition in the rustic villages that surround the monastery. For €65,00 per person for groups ranging from two people to eight people, you and your companions can be trained to weave authentic Italian wicker baskets over a course of four hours, being taught by local artisans who have been performing this craft for generations.

Another class that you may be interested in is the Wood and Stone Carving Class that is also available at the Monastery of Santo Spirito. Again, this art form has passed down through hundreds of years to the modern local artisans who will be on hand to teach you the basics to carving wood and stone.

This resort also offers you another way in which to visit the past by going on their Archaeological Excursion. Knowledgeable guides will take you on a fascinating journey, visiting local ruins and formations that date back to pre-Christian times. These guides will also enlighten you about the history of the monastery itself and the local villages which still maintain a certain medieval feeling about them.

The Monastery of Santo Spirito also offers a number of other activities, including an Italian cooking class, an area wine tasting course, and the opportunity to harvest mushrooms in the local fields and woods. For the outdoor enthusiasts, there are also activities such as horseback riding, mountain climbing, and skiing.

So if you are planning to visit Italy and are interested in basket weaving, carving, and other aspects of Italian history, the Monastery of Santo Spirito may be the perfect vacation spot for you.

Making A Claim? – How To ‘Gain Without The Pain’

Posted in Uncategorized at 11:00 am by admin

The reason why we take out travel insurance is to provide that ‘peace of mind’ should something go wrong and we can get our money back or part of it anyway. But life is never that simple and many of us are disappointed when our claim is declined, all because of obscure clauses in the policy small print which, if we are honest, none of us have bothered to read in the first place. This is both irritating and costly when it happens and unless there is very strong mitigating circumstances, insurers are very unlikely to back down. So what can we do to ensure that our claim does not suffer the same fate?

It really is important to read the small print as this will not only tell you what you are and, more importantly, not covered for but will also make you more conscious of what might happen whilst away on holiday and how to deal with it. As they say ‘Forearmed is Forewarned,’ and it will help ease what otherwise could be a stressful situation if things do go wrong. What are the common errors that make it easier for an insurer to decline a claim?

Pre-existing medical conditions – Have you declared these when taking out your travel insurance policy? And it is not just restricted to you and your travelling companions. Most policies are very strict here and ask you to declare a pre-existing medical condition on anyone who could subsequently get you to cancel or curtail your trip. If you don’t declare it and it subsequently appears on the Medical Certificate, which the insurer will ask you and your GP to complete, then it is highly likely that you won’t get any money back.

Baggage Claims – For loss, theft and damage, you will be required to get a report within 24 hours of the incident, from either the local police for theft claims, from the airline for lost, damaged or delayed baggage and from the hotel or tour representative, often for all three types of loss. Without these reports, it is probable that your claim will not be upheld. Travel insurance policies also require original receipts to be sent in to prove proof of purchase and to indicate purchase price. As most policies do not offer ‘new for old’ cover, a depreciation index is applied so what you get back is normally less than what you paid and this index is harsher if no receipts are provided and will be capped at a maximum amount per item (normally around £60).

Valuables, Money and Personal Effects – Is your mobile phone covered? What about your kids Nintendo Game Boy? These are simple questions but it is too late to assume that they are insured after the event. Valuables and Personal Money have even stricter rules applied to them and need to be looked after with greater care. Money for instance should be in a locked safe if not on your person (a locked drawer in your room is seldom ok. Likewise valuables should NEVER be left in ‘checked in’ luggage as this will definitely invalidate your claim.

It can be a minefield out there designed to trip up the unwary but with a little bit of preparation before you take out your travel insurance and sensible precautions once on your holiday, you can substantially improve your chances of coming home not out of pocket.

Last Minute Travel Ideas Vacationing To California’s Wine Country

Posted in Uncategorized at 11:00 am by admin

Some vacations take weeks, even months, to plan. But what happens if you decide, out of the blue, that you need a break?

Go ahead, be spontaneous—but choose your destination wisely. You need attractions that don’t need reservations, or won’t cost hundreds of dollars to see—like California.

Here are some tricks to guarantee a sudden, but hassle-free, trip:

1. Go to a Place the Whole Family Will Enjoy

Rather than drive yourself crazy with a complicated itinerary, choose one place that has a lot of activities that appeal to the whole family. You save on entrance fees and avoid the problem of transportation—getting a tour bus, and waking everyone up in time to catch it.

One example is Lake Sonoma. This 17,700-acre reserve has everything you need, for every mood, for every age. Want a little peace and quiet? Then sit by the beautiful lake and just enjoy the view. Read a book, sketch, or take a leisurely walk through the groves full of oak, madrone, alder, redwood and bay trees.

Looking for a little action? Than go hiking, swimming or hunting. Adventure-seekers can even set up camp, or hire a boat for an exciting ride around the lake.

Hoping to squeeze in a little “educational value” for the kids? Biology lessons come alive with the amazing variety of plants and wildlife.

There are many species of birds (including the endangered peregrine falcon), deer, rabbits, and insects. Children can also start a “nature scrapbook”, collecting flowers and plants they find along the trail, then looking up their scientific names. It’s cheaper than sending them off to Science Camp!

2. Take the Quickest Route to Paradise

Do you think you don’t have time to “see everything”? Maybe not the traditional way—but if you get a scenic air tour, then you’ll be able to explore acres and acres of California in just hours.

This is a ride you’ll never forget. Travel over the valleys and vineyards, and even see places accessible only through plane (don’t forget to bring your camera!).

The pilots are also trained to give interesting geographical and historical information of the areas you fly over—and can even customize the trip or arrange special photography flights.

3. Sign Up for Guided Tours

You can, in theory, read several books and then make your own itinerary. But that takes a lot of time and coordination. Save yourself the trouble and just sign up for a tour, which already has specific stops, maps, and even discounts.

Tours don’t have to be boring. You can get unique historical or cultural tours that you can’t find anywhere else—like the Sonoma County Farm Trails (which includes the chance to feed livestock, pick berries, and buy fresh produce straight from the farmer), or the Sonoma County Art Trails.

You can even go on a Wine Tour—California is famous for its famous vineyards—which includes classes on developing your palate.

4. Book Your Ticket Online

Websites make travel as easy and as fast as clicking on a website and typing in your reservations.

Companies such as Orbitz, Last Minute Travel, Expedia, Hotwire and Priceline will give you discount tickets to save you money when traveling. You’ll find cheap flights, hotels, vacation packages, cruises, car rentals, activities and more!
