In addition to the reunification talks set for the 3rd September this year, between the Greek Cyprian president Demetris Christofias and his Turkish counterpart Mehmet Ali Talat, the two leaders wish to rehabilitate areas within the UN buffer zone (a 300km stretch of deserted land, running along the border and through towns such as Nicosia and Famagusta) and prevent illegal dumping.
They have drawn up a series of confidence boosting measures with instructions to implement them immediately, to aid the peace process:
Work together in crisis situations.
For environmental experts to collaborate, exchanging ideas and information.
Work together to prevent wildfires.
Address waste management, treatment and recycling and increase awareness of water saving.
To reach a common approach towards mining and quarrying.
Find an agreement on biodiversity and nature protection.
To control and manage marine maritime pollution.
To control and manage asbestos pollution.
To control and manage historical pollution.
Compile a list of immovable Cyprian cultural heritage.
Form concrete plans for two pilot restoration projects.
Create guidelines for an interactive educational computer programme.
To exchange information and intelligence on criminal matters.
Despite making progress and working together to introduce these measures, the two leaders still cannot agree over the reunification of Cyprus. Northern Cyprus, the TRNC, wish to create a brand new Cyprian state, whilst the Greek Cypriots wish to reintroduce the old Republic of Cyprus with full inclusion of Turkish Cypriots.
Prior to the meeting, President Christofias outlined how he personally would like to reunify the island; he wished for a single sovereignty with rotating presidency, one citizenship, one economy and one international personality. He also spoke of both the Cyprian and Turkish communities being politically equal; however, somewhat contradictory to this aim, Christofias said that a president from the Greek Cypriot community would hold the office for a longer period, whilst the vice-president would come from the other community.
Greek Cypriots view the Turkish as invaders and the TRNC as an unlawful occupation of the northern part of their island. A petition was made by the Petitions Committee of the European Parliament supporting a report condemning the Turkish occupancy, with 26,000 Greek signatures.
The report states that as a candidate country Turkey is under obligation to respect fundamental principles of the EU, i.e. respect for civil liberties and property rights. The Famagusta Refugee Council (FRC) believes that Greek ownership would allow communities to co-exist more peacefully and together develop economic independence.
The Turkish Cypriot president has not commented on the issue, however Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, publicly supported the Turkish Cyprian President, Turkey will continue to support the constructive approach of Talat. He believed a solution would be achieved by the end of the year.
Although the leaders have conflicting ideas concerning the reunification of Cyprus, there does not seem to be animosity between the two communities. It is not hard for visiting EU citizens or either communities to cross the divide. It is generally a simple case of presenting a passport, with the exception of non-EU citizens crossing from the north to the south.

Mallorca is Spain’s largest island and is a member of the Balearic Islands situated in the Mediterranean Sea.
Mallorca, or Majorca as the English sometimes spell it, has had bad press over the last few decades because of its over-development in the 1960s. However, although there are parts of the island which have high-rise hotels and apartments, these tend to be just in one small area the Bay of Palma.
The rest of the island is a wonderful mix of attractions for those who love to rent villas instead of hotels, and offers :-
* Mountain scenery.* Fantastic beaches and coves.* Caves.* Aquacity.* Marineland.* Palma.
Mountains
The spectacular Mallorca mountains, in the north-western part of the island, are responsible for the lush greenery of the island. If you enjoy walking holidays, then you may want to walk through the Tramuntana mountains or you can simply drive through the mountains to enjoy the breathtaking scenery and views.
Beaches and Coves
Mallorca’s beaches range from busy touristy beaches, and beaches offering a wide variety of watersports, to isolated beaches in rocky coves that can only be accessed on foot or by sea. Mallorca’s best beaches include the beaches of the resorts of Magaluf and Palma Nova with their fine sandy beaches, water-sports and glass bottom boat trips, Platja de Coll Baix with its unspoilt pebble beach surrounded by rocks, the beaches of Camp de Mar and San Telm which are surrounded by pine forests, the environmentally protected beach of Es Trenc and the unspoilt Platja de Formentor.Which beach you visit all depends on where your villas in Mallorca are located and whether you like an isolated, unspoilt beach or a beach with facilities and water-sports.
The Caves
Mallorca has over 200 caves dotted around the island, some of which are open to the public. In the caves you will find stalactites, stalagmites and huge underground lakes. They even sometimes hold concerts in the caves because of the wonderful acoustics. The Coves (caves) d’Arta are located near to Capdepera and are surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery. These are great caves to visit because there is chamber after chamber to walk through and even a light and sound show to watch in the Chamber of Hell. Other caves include The Caves of Hams, located 1km from Porto Cristo with their underground lake and music/light show, and the Coves del Drac on Mallorca’s eastern coast with their underground amphitheatre.
Aquacity, El Arenal
If you are renting villas in Mallorca with children, this is the Mallorca attraction to visit. Have a fun packed day swimming, using water slides and enjoying attractions such as Banzai, Polynesia, the Grand Canyon and Devil’s tail. The park is located on the south of the island near El Arenal beach.
Marineland
Another great family attraction, this park is an amusement park where the family can enjoy watching performing seals and dolphins, seeing the park’s collection of sharks and reptiles, and watching the Parrot Circus.
Palma
Palma is the capital of Mallorca and is a mixture of high-rise hotels and a lovely Renaissance Old Town area. The five hundred year old cathedral is worth a visit, with its pillars, beautiful stained glass windows, Catalan Gothic architecture and interior features designed by the famous Antoni Gaudi. The cathedral overlooks Palma’s busy harbour with its pleasure boats that will take you for a tour around the harbour, and its ferry terminal where you can catch ferries to other islands.
Palma is also the place to go to sample Mallorca nightlife. In the narrow streets near Placa Llotja, a host of bars and clubs can be found.

Marbella is the best known resort of Andalucia’s Costa del Sol, the Sunshine Coast, and is sometimes called the St Tropez of Spain because of its popularity with the rich and famous. The resort has been tastefully redeveloped, unlike Torremolinos, has a beautiful old town area, the casco antiguo and many sights to see and tourist attractions to visit when you are renting villas in Marbella.
The Old Town
The old town area of Marbella is largely unspoilt and is made up of narrow white streets and alleyways, historical churches and pretty squares surrounded by the ruins of Moorish walls. The prettiest square, the Orange Square, Plaza de los Naranjos is located right in the middle of the Old Town and dates back to the 15th century. From this square you can see the 16th century Town Hall, the Hermitage of Santiago, the old governor’s house and a 16th century stone fountain at the end of Nueva Street. The nearby Plaza de la Iglesia, Church Square, is the location of the 16th century church of Nuestra Senora de la Encarnacion with its Baroque features, tower and famous organ.
Museo del Bonsai
The Bonsai Museum is situated in the Arroyo de la Represa park. It is an incredible display of bonsai trees and is said to be the largest collection of bonsais in Europe. Unwind after shopping or sightseeing by strolling through the shaded park of bonsais, weeping willows and lily ponds.
Rio Verde Roman Villa
This Roman villa can be found 4km east of Marbella and is from the second century. The villa is known for its unusual black and white mosaics which depict kitchen utensils as well as more classic themes like Medusa’s head. The detailed representations of kitchen equipment helped archaeologists to date the villa.
Roman Baths of Las Bovedas
These Roman baths can be found on the edge of the beach of the Guadalmina urbanization. These baths are from the third century and you will see a well-preserved bath in the centre surrounded by seven chambers which would have been steam rooms. It is also possible to see remains of the hydrocaust system. To visit the baths you need to visit the tourist office at San Pedro de Alcantera to arrange a guided tour or to collect a key.
The Municipal Art Gallery
Visit this gallery, when you are renting villas in Marbella, to see beautiful works by local artists. It can be found in the Jose Palomo Square.
The Museo del Grabado Espanol Contemporaneo
The Museum of Spanish Contemporary Engravings is said to be one of the world’s best collections of engravings. Make time to visit this museum to see works by Picasso, Miro, Dali and Tapies. The museum itself is a 16th century building, the old Bazan hospital.
The White Villages
Not far from Marbella, just off the coastal strip, built on the side of the mountains are the famous ‘White Villages’ (pueblos blancos), which have barely changed in the last hundred years.
Perhaps the nicest of these is Casares, which can be found if you drive inland for approximately 15km from the main highway near Estepona. Keep going past groves of olive and cork trees and, as you round the corner, you will experience your first dramatic view of the beautiful and unspolit village of Casares.
In this real working village, life continues much as it has done for decades, with locals gathering together in the village square every evening for conversation, drinks and tapas. For many people, this is the ‘real’ Spain that they came looking for, and hopefully, it will be for you as well.

As summertime hits the Rochester area, residents and visitors start exploring the outdoors, looking for ideas to offer excitement and entertainment. In the month of June, these people do not have to look very hard, as a week-long celebration in the second half of the month transforms the city. Rochesterfest is a citywide celebration of Rochester. Over 40 local businesses and organizations make the community event possible by sponsoring countless activities that offer entertainment and fun.
In 2008, Rochesterfest celebrated its 26th year of existence. The annual event brings with it a variety of food vendors, concerts, and family activities. Although the schedule varies somewhat each year, there are a number of favorite events that occur almost every time:
- Food Vendors: Civic Center Drive in downtown Rochester is closed for the week as food vendors from throughout the area come and set up shop. The event is both a popular lunchtime and dinner hangout during the week. Noontime and evening entertainment is provided as well.
- Annual Midwestern Lumberjack Championships: One of the most popular events of the week, contenders from around the world arrive to compete in various lumberjack events for cash prizes. 2008 marked the 13th year for the event.

A night of live bands, skateboarding, climbing, ultimate frisbee, and other events will provide teens with entertainment specifically aimed at them. Teenagers in Rochester notice this, and their attendance to this event shows how grateful they are.
- Theme Nights: In addition to Teen Night, other nights throughout the week are given other themes. One night is dedicated to Family Fun, offering beanbag toss, sack races, train rides, demonstrations by the Fire Department, and many other family events. Another popular event is Country Night, where people can enjoy country music and dancing throughout the evening. A night of dancing to a wider variety of music occurs another night of the week with the Street Dance.
- Home Federal Plane Pull for March of Dimes: At the Rochester International Airport, a game of tugowar with a 166,000 pound jet takes place. With a donation to the March of Dimes, 20 person teams compete in pulling a plane 12 feet in the fastest time.

- Treasure Hunt: Sponsored by a local business, clues are released every day of the week leading treasure seekers to the prize. The person who successfully deciphers the clues and finds the treasure, a Rochesterfest medallion hidden somewhere in the city of Rochester on public property, will receive a cash prize. In 2008, the reward was five hundred dollars.
- Grand Parade: On Friday evening, the Grand Parade steps off with over 100 units. The event is traditionally put on by the Ambassadors from Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce.

Are you looking for that perfect, vacation destination? If you are, you may be overwhelmed with all of your options. One of the first places you will want to examine is Jamaica. Chances are, you will be so pleased with what this amazing Caribbean island has to offer, that it will be your last examination.
So, what is it that makes Jamaica such as great vacation destination? In all honesty, a lot. With that said, the weather is a huge factor. The weather of Jamaica is warm, beautiful, and tropical, almost all year round. December to March is known as the winter months, but winter is nothing here like it is in the United States. In terms of rain, the rainy months are May and June and then September and November. Once again, the rainfall totals are often small compared to what you may be use to.
Now that you know what Jamaicas weather is like, you may be wondering how it can impact your travels. Tropical weather is ideal for all types of travel, but especially romantic getaways and honeymoons. How would you like to spend the day lounging by the beach with your spouse by your side? Sound pretty romantic! The weather is just one of the reasons why Jamaica is known as being the perfect destination for honeymoons and romantic getaways.
The lack of rain that the island sees is also nice for all types of travel, but particularly for family vacations. Nothing can ruin a family vacation quicker than rain. When on a Jamaica all-inclusive vacation, you rarely have to worry about the weather. This means that you dont have to keep your children corralled in a hotel room if and when bad weather does arrive. In fact, that leads to another benefit of Jamaica, all-inclusive family resorts. There is so much for you to do and see onsite that even if the weather temporarily took a turn for the worse, your trip wouldnt be impacted.
The tropical weather of Jamaica is also nice, as it allows you to get full use out of the beach. The beautiful beaches of Jamaica are another reason why it is a popular vacation destination. As previously stated, you can lounge around the beach surrounded by beautiful, tropical weather with your partner at your side. But, that isnt all that you can do. You can also enjoy an afternoon of swimming, boating, snorkeling, scuba diving, or kayaking.
