Lichfield (PRWEB) September 4, 2008 — With new laws on careless driving, survey highlights the distractions that are rife on Britain’s roads - from eating Chinese meals to using iPods and e-mail.

Over 1 in 7 drivers have asked the passenger to hold the steering wheel for them while they do something else

Nearly 90% admit to holding the steering wheel with their knees to allow them to juggle hot coffee, e-mails, takeaway food and more

25% of respondents know someone who has had an accident because of careless driving

Nearly 50% check e-mails on their Blackberry while driving, with a quarter writing documents

1 in 6 have spilt a hot drink while driving

The new laws on careless driving have been welcomed by car hire comparator Carrentals.co.uk, following its survey of 800 drivers, which highlights the use of everything from mobile phones to make up and even Chinese food by UK drivers.

The survey found that over 1 in 7 drivers have asked the passenger to hold the steering wheel to enable them to do anything from tying a shoelace to sending an e-mail or checking a map, underlining the potential danger of driving distractions.

Gareth Robinson, Managing Director of Carrentals.co.uk, said: “The survey findings surprised us, because they showed just how common it is for people to be doing other things while they are driving. The variety of activities that take place behind the wheel is vast, but our main concern was for road safety. The introduction of the new laws are very welcome, and this survey backs up the decision to toughen up on careless drivers whose actions can cause tragic consequences.”

The survey found that key distractions included changing music on the radio, with a quarter saying they often do this; checking directions on a map or sat nav; eating while driving; and over 50% still answer their mobile phone.

Nearly 90% of respondents said they have used their knees to steer the car to help keep them on the road while their hands are occupied elsewhere, while 22% use their elbows, and a small percentage even admitted to using their chin.

The issue of driving distractions is causing a growing number of accidents, with the research being told of incidents ranging from bumping the car in front to driving into a hedge and even rolling the car. Nearly 1 in 5 respondents said they knew someone who has had an accident because of distractions behind the wheel.

Adding to the danger on the road, nearly 1 in 6 have, or know someone who has, spilt a hot drink on themselves while driving, while 1 in 10 say they have taken part in a sexual act while driving.

Work is also taken on the road with nearly 50% checking e-mails on their Blackberry while driving, a quarter writing or checking documents, and others working on spreadsheets to ensure deadlines are met.

(PRWEB) September 4, 2008 — SonicElectronix, a leading provider of aftermarket car stereo equipment and consumer electronics, today announced that they would expand their line of Bluetooth compatible products in response to recent laws passed in California, New York, and Washington. The so-called “Bluetooth laws” have led to an increase in demand for both headsets and hands-free kits because of the recent law that prohibits people from holding a cell phone while driving.

Available in gold, silver and black, Aliph Jawbone’s latest headset features superior noise canceling capability due to the cutting-edge NoiseAssassin technology. Bluetooth headsets like the Jawbone II allow users to talk on the cell phone while using their hands to direct their vehicle’s steering wheel or for performing any other task at hand. This increases driver functionality and responsiveness, which is why Bluetooth users enjoy a safer and more efficient lifestyle.

“The Bluetooth laws were passed because it’s a lot safer to drive in a vehicle using the Bluetooth hands-free kits,” said Sedric Arnold, Marketing Director, Sonic Electronix. “People who knew nothing about Bluetooth before the law was passed are now looking to add Bluetooth to their car. They will find that it is hard to beat our selection and prices on Bluetooth products.”

Sonic Electronix is already an authorized dealer of top brands such as Aliph Jawbone, Blueant, Dual, JVC, Kenwood, MoodooFree and Pioneer, which enables them to offer customers top of the line Bluetooth products at competitive prices with full warranty coverage. The retailer’s growing line of Bluetooth products includes the complete Bluetooth stereo lineup, from Bluetooth-ready car stereos and receivers to in-dash head units with built-in Bluetooth hands-free capability. The latest in-dash DVD players with built-in monitors feature touchscreen dialing as an added convenience.

Arnold mentions the selection of sun-visor Bluetooth kits and bluetooth rearview mirrors with built-in Bluetooth as some of their top sellers in 2008 due to their enhanced safety features. These devices allow for voice activated dialing and use a digital voice to announce the name of the incoming caller. The caller ID is displayed on the rearview mirror readout to keep the driver’s eyes on the road. For further safety, when backing out in reverse, the parking sensors relay a beeping signal to alert the driver of an approaching object.

Sonic Electronix also carries Bluetooth hands-free kits which can integrate with factory OEM stereos. With the use of Parrot and EGO by Funkwerk Bluetooth kits and Parrot or PAC factory integration harnesses, users can participate in wireless conversations through their vehicle’s stereo system and auto-mute the music or radio station while the conversation takes place. Bluetooth conversations over the car speakers give users a factory integrated feel without having to replace or significantly modify the dash.

Marbella is the best known resort of Andalucia’s Costa del Sol, the Sunshine Coast, and is sometimes called “the St Tropez of Spain” because of its popularity with the rich and famous. The resort has been tastefully redeveloped, unlike Torremolinos, has a beautiful old town area, the “casco antiguo” and many sights to see and tourist attractions to visit when you are renting villas in Marbella.

The Old Town

The old town area of Marbella is largely unspoilt and is made up of narrow white streets and alleyways, historical churches and pretty squares surrounded by the ruins of Moorish walls. The prettiest square, the Orange Square, Plaza de los Naranjos is located right in the middle of the Old Town and dates back to the 15th century. From this square you can see the 16th century Town Hall, the Hermitage of Santiago, the old governor’s house and a 16th century stone fountain at the end of Nueva Street. The nearby Plaza de la Iglesia, Church Square, is the location of the 16th century church of Nuestra Senora de la Encarnacion with its Baroque features, tower and famous organ.

Museo del Bonsai

The Bonsai Museum is situated in the Arroyo de la Represa park. It is an incredible display of bonsai trees and is said to be the largest collection of bonsais in Europe. Unwind after shopping or sightseeing by strolling through the shaded park of bonsais, weeping willows and lily ponds.

Rio Verde Roman Villa

This Roman villa can be found 4km east of Marbella and is from the second century. The villa is known for its unusual black and white mosaics which depict kitchen utensils as well as more classic themes like Medusa’s head. The detailed representations of kitchen equipment helped archaeologists to date the villa.

Roman Baths of Las Bovedas

These Roman baths can be found on the edge of the beach of the Guadalmina urbanization. These baths are from the third century and you will see a well-preserved bath in the centre surrounded by seven chambers which would have been steam rooms. It is also possible to see remains of the hydrocaust system. To visit the baths you need to visit the tourist office at San Pedro de Alcantera to arrange a guided tour or to collect a key.

The Municipal Art Gallery

Visit this gallery, when you are renting villas in Marbella, to see beautiful works by local artists. It can be found in the Jose Palomo Square.

The Museo del Grabado Espanol Contemporaneo

The Museum of Spanish Contemporary Engravings is said to be one of the world’s best collections of engravings. Make time to visit this museum to see works by Picasso, Miro, Dali and Tapies. The museum itself is a 16th century building, the old Bazan hospital.

The White Villages

Not far from Marbella, just off the coastal strip, built on the side of the mountains are the famous ‘White Villages’ (pueblos blancos), which have barely changed in the last hundred years.

Perhaps the nicest of these is Casares, which can be found if you drive inland for approximately 15km from the main highway near Estepona. Keep going past groves of olive and cork trees and, as you round the corner, you will experience your first dramatic view of the beautiful and unspolit village of Casares.

In this real working village, life continues much as it has done for decades, with locals gathering together in the village square every evening for conversation, drinks and tapas. For many people, this is the ‘real’ Spain that they came looking for, and hopefully, it will be for you as well.

Mallorca is Spain’s largest island and is a member of the Balearic Islands situated in the Mediterranean Sea.

Mallorca, or Majorca as the English sometimes spell it, has had bad press over the last few decades because of its over-development in the 1960s. However, although there are parts of the island which have high-rise hotels and apartments, these tend to be just in one small area – the Bay of Palma.

The rest of the island is a wonderful mix of attractions for those who love to rent villas instead of hotels, and offers :-

* Mountain scenery.* Fantastic beaches and coves.* Caves.* Aquacity.* Marineland.* Palma.

Mountains

The spectacular Mallorca mountains, in the north-western part of the island, are responsible for the lush greenery of the island. If you enjoy walking holidays, then you may want to walk through the Tramuntana mountains or you can simply drive through the mountains to enjoy the breathtaking scenery and views.

Beaches and Coves

Mallorca’s beaches range from busy touristy beaches, and beaches offering a wide variety of watersports, to isolated beaches in rocky coves that can only be accessed on foot or by sea. Mallorca’s best beaches include the beaches of the resorts of Magaluf and Palma Nova with their fine sandy beaches, water-sports and glass bottom boat trips, Platja de Coll Baix with its unspoilt pebble beach surrounded by rocks, the beaches of Camp de Mar and San Telm which are surrounded by pine forests, the environmentally protected beach of Es Trenc and the unspoilt Platja de Formentor.Which beach you visit all depends on where your villas in Mallorca are located and whether you like an isolated, unspoilt beach or a beach with facilities and water-sports.

The Caves

Mallorca has over 200 caves dotted around the island, some of which are open to the public. In the caves you will find stalactites, stalagmites and huge underground lakes. They even sometimes hold concerts in the caves because of the wonderful acoustics. The Coves (caves) d’Arta are located near to Capdepera and are surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery. These are great caves to visit because there is chamber after chamber to walk through and even a light and sound show to watch in the “Chamber of Hell”. Other caves include The Caves of Hams, located 1km from Porto Cristo with their underground lake and music/light show, and the Coves del Drac on Mallorca’s eastern coast with their underground amphitheatre.

Aquacity, El Arenal

If you are renting villas in Mallorca with children, this is the Mallorca attraction to visit. Have a fun packed day swimming, using water slides and enjoying attractions such as Banzai, Polynesia, the Grand Canyon and Devil’s tail. The park is located on the south of the island near El Arenal beach.

Marineland

Another great family attraction, this park is an amusement park where the family can enjoy watching performing seals and dolphins, seeing the park’s collection of sharks and reptiles, and watching the Parrot Circus.

Palma

Palma is the capital of Mallorca and is a mixture of high-rise hotels and a lovely Renaissance Old Town area. The five hundred year old cathedral is worth a visit, with its pillars, beautiful stained glass windows, Catalan Gothic architecture and interior features designed by the famous Antoni Gaudi. The cathedral overlooks Palma’s busy harbour with its pleasure boats that will take you for a tour around the harbour, and its ferry terminal where you can catch ferries to other islands.

Palma is also the place to go to sample Mallorca nightlife. In the narrow streets near Placa Llotja, a host of bars and clubs can be found.

In addition to the reunification talks set for the 3rd September this year, between the Greek Cyprian president Demetris Christofias and his Turkish counterpart Mehmet Ali Talat, the two leaders wish to rehabilitate areas within the UN buffer zone (a 300km stretch of deserted land, running along the border and through towns such as Nicosia and Famagusta) and prevent illegal dumping.

They have drawn up a series of ‘confidence boosting measures’ with instructions to implement them immediately, to aid the peace process:

Work together in crisis situations.

For environmental experts to collaborate, exchanging ideas and information.

Work together to prevent wildfires.

Address waste management, treatment and recycling and increase awareness of water saving.

To reach a common approach towards mining and quarrying.

Find an agreement on biodiversity and nature protection.

To control and manage marine maritime pollution.

To control and manage asbestos pollution.

To control and manage historical pollution.

Compile a list of immovable Cyprian cultural heritage.

Form concrete plans for two pilot restoration projects.

Create guidelines for an interactive educational computer programme.

To exchange information and intelligence on criminal matters.

Despite making progress and working together to introduce these measures, the two leaders still cannot agree over the reunification of Cyprus. Northern Cyprus, the TRNC, wish to create a brand new Cyprian state, whilst the Greek Cypriots wish to reintroduce the old Republic of Cyprus with full inclusion of Turkish Cypriots.

Prior to the meeting, President Christofias outlined how he personally would like to reunify the island; he wished for a single sovereignty with rotating presidency, one citizenship, one economy and one ‘international personality’. He also spoke of both the Cyprian and Turkish communities being politically equal; however, somewhat contradictory to this aim, Christofias said that a president from the Greek Cypriot community would hold the office for a longer period, whilst the vice-president would come from the other community.

Greek Cypriots view the Turkish as invaders and the TRNC as an unlawful occupation of the northern part of their island. A petition was made by the Petitions Committee of the European Parliament supporting a report condemning the Turkish occupancy, with 26,000 Greek signatures.

The report states that as a candidate country Turkey is under obligation to respect fundamental principles of the EU, i.e. respect for civil liberties and property rights. The Famagusta Refugee Council (FRC) believes that Greek ownership would allow communities to co-exist more peacefully and together develop economic independence.

The Turkish Cypriot president has not commented on the issue, however Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, publicly supported the Turkish Cyprian President, “Turkey will continue to support the constructive approach of Talat”. He believed a solution would be achieved by the end of the year.

Although the leaders have conflicting ideas concerning the reunification of Cyprus, there does not seem to be animosity between the two communities. It is not hard for visiting EU citizens or either communities to cross the divide. It is generally a simple case of presenting a passport, with the exception of non-EU citizens crossing from the north to the south.
